Yogi of the Month

BRIAN SCALABRINE

SEPTEMBER 2006

What brought you to Intent Yoga Center?
Physical therapist, trainers, chiropractors and medical doctors all recommended yoga as a great way for me to rehabilitate an old hamstring injury. The biking and running I was doing only seemed to aggravate and tighten my hamstring more, so over the summer I contacted Jean about scheduling some private yoga sessions. Time and again those providing various therapies told me I needed to gain flexibility, strength and stamina in my hamstring before it would heal properly.

What benefits have you gained from yoga?
Yoga provides what my body needs in order to heal. As I gain flexibility in one area of my body I realize other areas open up. I’ve increased flexibility in my ankles, shoulders and spine all of which will affect my game in a tremendous way. As an athlete, basketball is easy for me, but yoga is hard. My competitive nature is to push myself into the poses rather than relax. Yoga has taught me that sometimes in order to accomplish more I should try less. During the last 6 weeks I’ve developed a greater awareness of the challenges of learning something new. I am better able to adapt to changes, whether it’s the change of moving from one posture to another or uprooting and moving across the country to a temporary home in the Boston area. Yoga reduces my stress level and cultivates a feeling of connection which helps my communication skills with my wife and business partners. I believe yoga will help me be a better husband, father, businessman and basketball player.

What inspires you to continue with your practice?
Yoga keeps me centered. Traveling all over the country playing 82 basketball games during the regular season, 4 games in 5 nights takes its toll on my body. The travel schedule takes me out of my comfort zone. Yoga has taught me to stay connected to my breath in order to adapt to the rigorous schedule and disruptions of my daily routine. It’s hard to describe all of the benefits you will gain from yoga it really must be experienced.

How do you "practice lightly on the earth"?
I believe in supporting local businesses and therefore shop locally. My wife and I enjoy living in town which keeps us out of the car and walking or biking to yoga, the bank, grocery stores and restaurants. I have a greater awareness of the importance of organics and purchase organic fruits and vegetables when available. I certainly feel the difference in my body.

What are your favorite poses?
Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana), Warrior I (Virabidrasana I) , Supported Plow (Halasana) and Corpse Pose (Savasana)

CLAIRE WESLEY

AUGUST 2006

Claire has been attending classes since we first opened the doors to the studio last May. She attends the lunchtime yoga classes and others as time allows. Along with being committed to her yoga practice, Claire is also a dedicated bicycle commuter, and belly dancer. She logs 75 miles a week on her bike during the summer months and only stops during the foul weather seasons due to inadequate bike lanes and safety issues. Claire teaches belly dancing in her free time, along with performing and playing the recorder with a Seattle group. Thanks Claire for being such a positive role model and inspiration.

Here's Claire's memory of her first experience with yoga:

Growing up I always tried to be good, so when my grandmother told me to lean forward on my knees, make my eyes big and stick out my tongue for the Lion Pose, I was super impressed! Even though I was only five then, I’ve been enchanted with yoga ever since!

I’ve worked full time at the Enumclaw Public Library for over 20 years and still find it stimulating. In the summer I commute by bicycle from Cumberland as often as I can. This year I’ve noticed increased strength and focus thanks to yoga. When the weather turns to rain, and riding to work is not an option, I am hoping to increase my weekly yoga practice and look forward to a greater commitment to classes at Intent Yoga Center
